back from tour. van broke down again on the last day, again in oregon, this time canyonville. we spent the night in this small casino town and jake won enough $ to pay for the tow and repairs at the roulette table. seattllites, come celebrate our return this friday and saturday, july 6 & 7 at the tractor.
tim s

greetings from the hard road. the van broke 5 hours into the trip and we got stuck in pendleton, or, for a night and a day. apologies to boise and park city for missing the shows. we did play an impromptu set in pendleton at a hiphop honkytonk called crabby's. amazing.... kinda makes me want to start believing in fate. then the local ford diesel mechanic made a housecall to our motel--on a sunday no less--to fix the van (a ford diesel!). we're back on track for denver tonight.
see you there,

i'm planning a national tour for june. we'll try to hit most major cities, but please email me if you want to help book or promote a show your town, or if you're off the beaten track and think you can get more than a handful of friends out to a show. any tips on what the cool venue in town is (and if you have any pull with the booker), cheap (or free) places to stay etc. are appreciated. also, if you're a band with a regional following and would like to trade a show and/or if you're a touring band that wants to package, holler at me too.

back from the e coast. the show in philly was at a place called world cafe live, which licenses its name from (and shares a building with) WXPN, the local NPR affiliate that hosts the program World Cafe that featured me a few weeks back. the show i played was a pretty weird scene, as the upstairs stage of the venue is mainly a cafe that seems to attract a lunch crowd of businessmen and senior citizens (my show was at 1pm). the place was pretty full, but it seemed only a handful of people were there to hear music. there was a table full of young businessmen trying to conduct a lunch meeting ACTUALLY ON STAGE WITH ME about 15 feet away who i think it's pretty safe to say were not "feelin' the music." but i sold 3 CDs and got a chance to meet 4 people who actually travelled to hear me play. one was the sister of a very good friend of mine in seattle who came from maryland with her friend from DC. i sat with them for a bit and convinced them to give me a ride back to the hotel. they obliged on the condition that they could take pictures with me on the stairs of the art museum where they filmed the famous scene from ROCKY (i will post in the LOOK section). that made the otherwise lackluster show experience completely worthwhile.
the show in NYC at the knitting factory was one of redemption. sam of ghosts i've met, who recently relocated to NYC, played a fine set with spare but tasteful cello and banjo accompaniment. brent arnold, the cellist, plucked out bass notes for a couple tunes, mimicking upright bass, which i thought was particularly sexy. our good friend drew victor, who is back in brooklyn now, is handling bass duties for an outfit called a locomotive. they played a great set too, featuring outstanding male & female 3-part harmonies. i was satisfied with my set as well, and the crowd was more than attentive. the set was heavy on the fingerstyle-guitar songs, which i tend to avoid in the more rockin' band atmosphere because they don't translate as well to a latenite, drunken crowd (and are harder to play for a latenite, drunken tim). but this room was smallish and my gear was limited to a yamaha hollow body guitar with very few embellishments, so i knew my playing had to be the main gimmick for this particular show. "bees at nite" and "sometimes a fool" came off without a hitch, which justified my extra practice in the hotel room in philly. the voice was strong too, despite battling a cold virus stowaway from seattle. post-show, we managed to herd 8 separate groups of friends (and 1 random showgoer) to the same dirty karaoke bar in chinatown, where we all discovered who we really were.
next stop is seattle, july 8 at the tractor tavern for a full-band show. some dates with the long winters are in the works too, so stay tuned.

sasquatch wrap-up:
so after 3+ months of anticipation for the high-profile sasquatch festival at the gorge (including a bizarre appearance by yours truly on cable news), we were greeted at the "yeti stage" by a thunder/lighting/hailstorm of almost biblical proportions that resulted in the production folks "calling" our stage because of dangerous conditions. we and the boys from slender means quickly sheltered ourselves (and as many other millers-about as we could fit) from the elements in the provided backstage trailer. we noticed there was electricity in the trailer so i plugged in my guitar, turned the amp up to 10, put it in the doorway and proceeded to play every hot lick i knew as a mass exodus of festival-goers limped along the trail back to their vehicles. the weather cleared about 10 minutes before we were scheduled to take the stage, but the sound technicians were nowhere to be found and electricity had been yanked from the stage. so, for the 50 or so kind people who stuck it out to see me take the stage acoustically and completely unamplified, thanks for singing the electric guitar riffs and listening attentively to the quiet parts. sorry we couldn't rock you as thoroughly as we had planned. we'll make it up to you june 9 at the croc....

wednesday, february 23 at sunset tavern
with my honcho drew victor and nik freitas
i'm working out a couple more numbers with my current lineup of players, so this show is guaranteed to be somewhat sexier than most. i think i/we come on last, in the neighborhood of 11pm.
been hard at work producing/arranging some stuff for an extremely talented kid called mark adamec. it's a project we started when i was living in oxford, mississippi, and i'm super-duper excited to be finishing it up. the "restless child" track in the LISTEN section is a rough mix from these sessions.

hey folks. i'm back. been geeking out as of late with this new instrument called a spring drum. sounds like something out of an old sci-fi film. you'll probably hear it on every new song from here on out....
show w/ giant sand was great. howe's new lineup is more than competent and nice gentlemen to boot (they even pretended to like my playing).
still shopping the new record out there to the music biz folk. we've got some interest from a few, which is very promising.
got a weird remix for the track "funeral music" in the works. found a janky-ass pedal steel part buried deep in the recording session from mississippi. and working on putting together a few shows for the coming months. more info to follow.
stay strong,
tiM

forgive me.
it's been too long. been busy moving out of the house of destruction after 7 yrs. and into seattle's fre-lard hood. settling into my new digs, though. got the recording gear set up and working on a prince cover ("slow love"), potentially for a valentine's compilation.
check the photo collage in the LOOK section. some stuff from tour and elsewhere. thanks to the photographers: chris deichl (live photos), jason rowe (nightlife) and colin white (sad clown).
thursday, october 21, the tractor, seattle
with mooncalf and dark sergeant
tim is #1! (plays first, 9pm-ish)
y'all seattllites should try to make it to this show at the tractor next thursday. mooncalf and dark sergeant are on the bill, too, and i will be playing with members of both bands (and my trusty keyboard molester jason rowe) for the majority of my set. not to be missed!
huge love 4 u and u and u,

i'm currently cruising through the winding roads of the redwood forest, left hand on the wheel, right hand typing. multi-tasking, as they say. with tour comes difficult decisions: should i prop my left foot on the dash? how badly would my body then be mangled if we wrecked? shall i consume more crap even though i feel miserable? (i usually opt for the all-crap diet on the road for adventure's sake. with varying results...)
the LA show was the best/most fun i've played in years. eric and his bass-playin buddy nick rocked 3 songs (halfway house, pleasant valley state prison, on film i play myself) and were stellar even with only a couple hours of practice (thanks again, dudes). the crowd was a reunion of seattle expatriates who were oh so attentive to the army's set. the tim was very pleased. i drew some of my best sharpie cover art, too. the best was a greenleaf tree mouse eating the empire state building. my friend chris d. took some awesome photos that i will post here when i learn how. the late night led us to stone canyon for nightswimming, piano bangin' and an ass-kicking dance party, thanks to sara and johanna for being great hosesses and thanks to all the honchitos who made this run possible. MVP award goes to douglas for bringing all his extra gear that i ended up using.
huge,
tim

we take the stage tonight at 10:30ish at the knitting factory (hollywood) for those of you interested in coming down.

sitting in the silverlake portion of LA watching a shaven cat eat. freeloading at erin and eric's place (thanks guys). eric's going to bang some drums for the show tomorrow. he was the touring drummer for the 'tigers and we're happy to be reunited for the show. i'm slated to come on last (10:30ish) for those of you who are hitting the show.
SF show was great. made some coin. reaquainted with some old friends, one being hudson bell, who also played that night. thanks mucho to jeanne and peter for the hospitality.
honchitos forever,
tim

figured i'd write something coherent during the daylight hours for a change. i'm in the van just south of ashland, or. on the way to SF for the show on sunday. we are 8 strong in the vessel. personnel: jason rowe (playing keys in my "band"), drew victor, drew's banjoman chris, jason d. of maldives fame, jeff london, douglas mapes (merchant, latenite designated driver), colin white (part flava flav, part S1W), and i, the army. this is turning out to be a very fun crew. we made enough at the seattle show to cover gas, which was pretty much our only concern. portland show was very fun despite the slim crowd. thanks to shana for the floor space for sleeping in the hotel and for assembling CDs and buttons.. and thanks to the waitstaffs of the sandy hut and the montage for tolerating our ranch dressing and vinegar chugging competitions. bad times. all worries
just crossed into california.....
next time,
tim

hey all. here be the confirmed west coast dates so far:
aug 4, seattle, sunset tavern
aug 5, portland, the meow meow
aug 8, san francisco, the make-out room
aug 11, LA, the knitting factory
these shows will feature a separate set by me and each of my travelling companions: drew victor, the maldives and jeff london (amy blaschke joins the bill for the sunset show). set times/order will vary from night to night. i'm planning on updating the site daily from the road, but when in doubt, arrive early!
in the current absence of a proper record label, i'll be printing "limited edition" copies of my new album, FUNERAL MUSIC, available for $10 at these shows. each CD will be one of a kind, with custom-designed-on-the-premises cover art by yours truly.
stay tuned for frequent tour updates/jounal entries from the road. looking forward to seeing you somewhere out there!

i put together a show thursday, july 1, at the sunset tavern in ballard, seattle, wa. my friend jason's band, the maldives will play, too. really cool stuff. and mike dumovich will open if everything falls into place (a great melancholy seattle singer-songwriter). come, listen, drink PBR or cheap red wine. or cola. or nothing. just come...
home recording enthusiasts:
check the new tape op mag (no. 41, may/june, i believe). some great EQ and microphone basics. very useful. and an interview with sigur ros about the converted swimming pool facility in iceland they call their studio. a truly great publication. if you're into re-amping a guitar track through a hallway and setting up a tube mic on omni in the shower stall of your upstairs bathroom (like me), you'll really dig it.

i'm back.
saw some good seattle rock shows in the interim. sondre lerche, destroyer, the shins and fruit bats--theses are the artists you hippies need to check if you haven't already.
hi-fived dan from destroyer twice for being awesome. witnessed some hardcore honky-style double dutch rope-jumpin outside of neumo's. a girl broke my favorite shirt out by the ropes...
dratttt......
on the "creative" side, been painting some since i finished the record. if you move into an apartment or townhouse by gasworks park, maybe you'll see my handi-work.....
putting a show together july 1 at the sunset tav in seattle. stay tuned for specs.

Hello friends.
I'm playing a show here in Seattle at the Tractor, Wednesday, April 21. Also on the bill is Graham Travis. I think I should take the stage sometime around 10pm. I will be turning 27 at midnight. Gifts and/or hugs are encouraged.
Almost have this record I've been working on in the can. Just need to mix the beast. Check out some tracks in the LISTEN section.
As always, feel free to email me for any reason. I will be posting your questions and my answers in the LEARN section for kicks, so bring 'em on.
Thanks again to the talented Mr. Colin White for helping me put this site together.
Forever,
Tim
